Movement Joint Spacing for Asymmetric Openings

Masonry expands and shrinks. If the window and door openings are unevenly distributed across the wall, the stress shifts to the narrow piers and cracking starts there first. This calculation determines the spacing at which vertical movement joints should be placed and the expected crack width near the openings.

When We Use This

  • A long facade with irregularly placed openings
  • A facade where the usual rule of thumb for movement joint spacing does not fit
  • Recurring cracking next to window corners in existing work

Basis

  • NEN-EN 1996-1-1 (Eurocode 6)
  • NPR 9096-1-1

The calculation follows these standards. You receive a calculation report in which the assumptions and the verification are traceable.
