Openwork Masonry (Brazilian Bond)

Openwork masonry, also known as Brazilian or claustra brickwork, is architecturally attractive but structurally demanding: the openings remove part of the bed-joint cross-section, while the wind load on the wall stays the same. This calculation verifies the flexural tensile strength perpendicular to the bed joints for that bond.

When We Use This

  • A facade or garden wall with an open, permeable brick pattern
  • An architect asking for a more open bond than usual
  • Wanting to know in advance how far the pattern can go before it becomes structurally critical

Basis

  • NEN-EN 1996-1-1 (Eurocode 6)
  • NPR 9096-1-1
  • Van der Pluijm failure method

The calculation follows these standards. You receive a calculation report in which the assumptions and the verification are traceable.
