Semicircular and Segmental Arches

A masonry arch carries load through compression, not through reinforcement. Whether that works depends on the arch shape, the load above it and the resistance of the support against spreading. This calculation verifies that interaction for semicircular and segmental arches.

When We Use This

  • A masonry arch above a window or passage, in new construction or restoration
  • Assessment of an existing arch that has developed cracking
  • Whether a shallower arch with the same span is still structurally justified

Basis

  • NEN-EN 1996-1-1 (Eurocode 6)
  • NEN-EN 1991-1-1
  • Arch theory according to Heyman

The calculation follows these standards. You receive a calculation report in which the assumptions and the verification are traceable.
