Maximum Facade Height with CLT

Cross-laminated timber shrinks and shortens under load, while masonry expands due to moisture and temperature. In a timber structure with a masonry outer leaf, the two therefore move apart, and the cavity wall ties have to absorb that difference. This calculation determines up to which facade height that remains justified.

When We Use This

  • Timber construction with a masonry outer leaf, with or without a concrete base
  • Whether an extra storey still fits within the tie capacity
  • Establishing where horizontal breaks in the outer leaf are needed

Basis

  • NEN-EN 1996-1-1 (Eurocode 6)
  • NEN-EN 1995-1-1 (Eurocode 5)

The calculation follows these standards. You receive a calculation report in which the assumptions and the verification are traceable.

Please Note

With CLT there are more uncertainties in the starting assumptions than with concrete or calcium silicate. We go through those with you per project before an outcome is put on the table.
