Non-metallic reinforcement for concrete structures

Rigid carbon and glass fibre reinforcement grids replace steel reinforcement in load-bearing concrete structures. They provide higher tensile strength, no corrosion and allow up to 50% less concrete use. GRID Carbon and GRID Glass are designed for this, while REBAR Carbon replaces classic reinforcing steel in structural design.

What is non-metallic reinforcement for concrete?

Non-metallic (also: FRP) reinforcement consists of carbon, glass or basalt fibre that absorbs the tensile forces in concrete, as reinforcing steel traditionally does. Because the material does not corrode, the reinforcement stays intact even when exposed to moisture or de-icing salts, without the cracking that rust expansion of steel can cause.

Which products suit concrete structures

GRID Carbon is an ultra-strong, lightweight carbon reinforcement grid for load-bearing concrete structures, with a tensile strength several times higher than classic steel reinforcement meshes. GRID Glass offers a comparable, corrosion-resistant solution in glass fibre. REBAR Carbon is the non-metallic bar for structural applications, suitable for aggressive environments such as bridges, tunnels and maritime structures.

Installation

The reinforcement grids are placed in the formwork before the concrete is poured, just like a steel mesh; REBAR Carbon is used as a bar in the same way as reinforcing steel. The exact layout, overlap and cover follow from the structural calculation and the technical data sheet of the chosen product.

Standards and requirements

The exact design values, exposure class and application limits of GRID Carbon, GRID Glass and REBAR Carbon are given on the technical data sheet of the chosen product; structural sizing is done per project by a structural engineer.

Frequently asked questions

Is carbon fibre reinforcement stronger than steel?

The tensile strength of GRID Carbon is several times higher than that of classic steel reinforcement meshes, at a much lower weight.

Can this reinforcement always replace steel reinforcement?

Not automatically: the choice and sizing is done per project by a structural engineer, based on the structural requirements and the technical data sheet.

Why is there no corrosion with carbon or glass fibre?

Carbon and glass fibre are non-metallic and do not react with moisture or de-icing salts the way steel does, so rust expansion and the resulting cracking do not occur.
