Seismic retrofitting of masonry and concrete

Strengthening masonry and concrete in earthquake-prone areas is specifically designed for the Groningen situation and European seismic standards. ANTISEISMIC Grid, ANTISEISMIC Wrap and the related connectors are developed for this.

What is the CRM system?

ANTISEISMIC Grid is a rigid reinforcement mesh specially designed for the CRM (Composite Reinforced Mortar) system: a non-corrosive, high-strength, lightweight, alkali-resistant glass fibre mesh that reinforces existing and new masonry and concrete structures under static and dynamic loads. It increases the strength, stiffness and ductility of structural elements. Ductility is a structure's ability to deform without failing outright, which is essential during an earthquake.

Which products suit seismic retrofitting

ANTISEISMIC Wrap is a unidirectional carbon fibre fabric specifically designed for FRP systems in seismic strengthening applications. The ANTISEISMIC Connector L-shape and Open End connect the reinforcement to the existing structure, thereby increasing the ductility of the whole.

Installation

In the CRM system, ANTISEISMIC Grid is applied in a layer of mortar on the existing wall; ANTISEISMIC Wrap is applied with resin around or on the structural element. The connectors are drilled through the structure and anchored. The exact execution is given in the technical data sheet per product and, given the seismic function, always requires a project-specific design.

Standards and requirements

The products are designed for European seismic standards and the specific situation in Groningen. The exact application limits and design values are given on the technical data sheet; the seismic sizing is done per project by a structural engineer.

Frequently asked questions

Can my home in Groningen be made earthquake-resistant with these products?

The products are specifically designed for the Groningen situation and European seismic standards; the concrete approach and sizing for a specific home is done per project by a structural engineer.

What is the CRM system?

CRM stands for Composite Reinforced Mortar: ANTISEISMIC Grid is applied in a layer of mortar on the existing wall to increase strength, stiffness and ductility.

What is ductility and why does it matter in earthquakes?

Ductility is a structure's ability to deform without failing outright. During an earthquake, sufficient ductility prevents a sudden, brittle collapse.
